Aswan
Experience one of the most extraordinary archaeological sites in Egypt on a full-day tour from Aswan to the legendary temples of Abu Simbel. Located near the southern border of Egypt, these monumental temples were built by the great pharaoh Ramesses II during the 13th century BCE. Carved directly into a sandstone mountain, the temples stand as a masterpiece of ancient Egyptian engineering and artistic achievement.
The larger temple is dedicated to the gods Amun, Ra-Horakhty, and Ptah, as well as the deified Ramesses II himself, while the smaller temple honors Queen Nefertari and the goddess Hathor. The colossal statues guarding the entrance, each standing over 20 meters high, create one of the most iconic images in Egypt.
This remarkable site was relocated in the 1960s during the construction of the Aswan High Dam to protect it from the rising waters of Lake Nasser, making it one of the greatest archaeological rescue operations in history.
A visit to Abu Simbel offers travelers a unique opportunity to explore the grandeur of ancient Egypt while enjoying the dramatic desert landscapes of southern Egypt. This unforgettable journey is a must for history lovers and travelers seeking a deeper connection to Egypt’s ancient civilization.
Your adventure begins early in the morning with pickup from your Aswan hotel. You will travel south through the dramatic desert landscape in a comfortable air-conditioned vehicle for approximately three hours until reaching the impressive site of Abu Simbel Temples.
Upon arrival, your Egyptologist guide will introduce you to the history of this extraordinary monument built by Ramesses II more than 3,000 years ago. The Great Temple is guarded by four enormous statues of the king seated on his throne, each carved directly into the mountain. Inside the temple, explore beautifully decorated halls and chambers, filled with intricate carvings depicting scenes of royal victories and religious rituals.
Next, visit the nearby smaller temple dedicated to Queen Nefertari and the goddess Hathor. This elegant temple is unique in that it honors a queen with statues nearly as large as the king's.
During the tour, you will also learn about the incredible international effort that saved the temples from flooding when the Aswan High Dam was built in the 1960s. The temples were carefully cut into blocks and relocated to higher ground, preserving this world treasure for future generations.
After exploring and taking photos of this magnificent site, relax during the scenic return drive to Aswan, where your guide will drop you off at your hotel.
